Over the last few years the diocese has collaborated with Trócaire to offer an opportunity to students and teachers to explore Climate Justice. The response to the workshop was very positive and both teachers and students enjoyed the session immensely.

This year we have decided to offer the workshop in three centres in the diocese.

Solas Bhríde, Kildare                                                   Tuesday, February 28

Cathedral Parish Centre, Carlow                                Tuesday, March 7

Mt St Anne’s Retreat Centre                                      Tuesday, March 14

The sessions will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 2:00p.m.

Schools are invited to send 3 – 5 students from 5th or 6th class, and 1 teacher to the session. A maximum number of 30 students will be accommodated on each day.

2 education officers from Trócaire will facilitate workshops exploring the theme of climate justice through active learning methodologies. There is no charge for the day. Students and teachers are asked to bring packed lunches. Tea and coffee will be provided for the staff members attending. If your school is interested in availing of the workshop in one of these venues please contact Maeve Mahon as soon as possible with numbers and the name and email address of the teacher who will be accompanying the children.

The following gives an outline of the content of the workshop:

Morning

The teachers will observe the morning workshop.

The students will explore:

–          the science behind climate change

–          the impacts of climate change on us here in Ireland and in other countries around the world

Afternoon

The students will explore:

–          different ways to take action against climate change

–          how to bring this learning back to your schools and share with the school community

The teachers will participate in a CPD session which will explore:

–          active learning methodologies to teach about climate justice

–          how to integrate climate justice education across all subjects in the curriculum

–          classroom resources

Trócaire would like your students and teachers to return to their schools and share their learning with other students and staff in the school and take action against climate change. Trócaire will contact the teachers again in a few weeks/months to offer additional support and to learn what actions the schools have taken.
