The Cathedral was completed in 1833 and dedicated by Bishop Doyle on 1st December 1833. Many refurbishments and improvements have taken place over the years. The Cathedral was rededicated after extensive renovations on Sunday 22nd June 1997 by Bishop Laurence Ryan.
