Vocations Sunday

Vocations Sunday – 3 May 2009 – marks the end of the nationwide Year of Vocation.

In the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin we are very pleased that we will have at least two students joining the four whom we already have in formation for priesthood.

Priesthood today is a radical option. In a world which seems to struggle with the idea of ‘calling’ the choice to study for priesthood is a dramatic witness to a belief that God knows us and holds us in the palm of His hand. And also, that He calls us into being for a definite plan to play a particular role in His loving plan for the world.

If you would like to explore the possibility of a vocation to priesthood please make contact with our diocesan Vocations Director, Fr. Ruairi O’Domhnaill (details below).

Five days of prayer for vocations

The diocese has produced a special prayer leaflet which offers a five day prayer for vocations. People are invited to follow these prayers from 4th – 8th May. Of course it can be used at any time by families, individuals, prayers groups etc.

Benedict XVI is urging Catholics to pray for vocations with the confidence that God never ceases to call, and that he will give the graces for a generous response.

The Pope affirmed this in his message for the next World Day of Prayer for Vocations (3 May 2009) entitled Faith in the Divine Initiative the Human Response.

Pray! he urged the Church, emphasizing that prayer for vocations should be continuous and trusting.

Benedict XVI noted: Our first duty, therefore, is to keep alive in families and in parishes, in movements and in apostolic associations, in religious communities and in all the sectors of diocesan life this appeal to the divine initiative with unceasing prayer.

We must pray that the whole Christian people grows in its trust in God, convinced that the Lord of the harvest does not cease to ask some to place their entire existence freely at his service so as to work with him more closely in the mission of salvation.
