The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Ireland will host will hold their first ever International Council in Dublin next week on 30th & 31st May.
It takes place at the Emmaus Retreat & Conference Centre, Swords, Co. Dublin and will be attended by approximately 50 SVP Presidents from around the world.
Mairead Bushnell National President of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Ireland said that the decision to hold this international General Assembly in Ireland is a reflection of the esteem that the SVP and its 9,500 volunteers in Ireland are held by the organisation throughout the world.
It will also be the first visit to Ireland by Dr Michael Thio D.H., as President General of the International Confederation of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Dr. Thio, from Singapore, was elected to the position of President General in 2010. He is the 15th President General but the first non-European and the first Asian to hold this position in the 177 years history of the Society, which was founded in 1833 in Paris, France, by Blessed Frederick Ozanam.
Dr. Thio has been a member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP) for 44 years, serving as the National President of Singapore for 18 years and the last 20 years serving on the Council General International (CGI).
In 2010 he was conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa, by Adamson University, a renowned Catholic University in the Philippines, For his distinguished, dedicated and long-time service to humanitarian and charity work globally, Prior to his retirement he had been Managing Director of British Telecom for South East Asia for 13 year. He is a graduate in Business Administration with majors in Finance and Accounting.
The Society of St Vincent de Paul is present in 147 countries with 750,000 members and over 1.3 million volunteers assisting over 25 million poor and needy in the world. The global Headquarters of the Society is in Paris.
