Benedict XVI is praying for the 33 Chilean miners who have been stuck deep in a subterranean mine for 69 days as efforts in the South American country are under way to rescue them.

“The Blessed Angela of Foligno helps us to understand that true happiness consists in friendship with Christ, crucified for love of us. In entrusting to divine goodness I continue to pray with hope for the miners in the region of Atacama in Chile”.

It is expected that within hours the miners trapped 700 meters below ground for more than two months in the City of San José return to see the light.

During this time, Benedict XVI expressed his solidarity with the miners and their families by sending them messages of hope and encouragement.

From Castel Gandolfo encouraged them to remain calm.

“I commends them and their families to the intercession of St. Lawrence, patron of miners. I assure my spiritual closeness and continuous prayers, so that they maintain calm as they await a happy fulfillment of the work being done for their rescue.”

A few days later gave 33 rosaries to the Archbishop of Santiago, Cardinal Francisco Javier Errazuriz order to take them personally.

Also expressed personally his closeness to the Ambassador of Chile, Fernando Zegers Santa Cruz.

The miners wanted to thank the Pope’s concern, and sent a flag of Chile signed by all.

Benedict XVI was excited and hoped that they would be rescued soon. Within hours, this desire to all be true.
