Fr Liam Lawton returns again to the National Concert Hall on 28 October 2008 to perform some of his best loved songs and new material accompanied by the Irish Session Orchestra.

Music Ministry

Following his ordination in 1984, Fr. Liam served in Carlow Cathedral Parish and Knockbeg College before the late Bishop Ryan gave him the opportunity to pursue his music ministry full-time; a ministry that Bishop Moriarty has continued to endorse and support.

His music has been used in such places as the Vatican, The White House and The Chicago Symphony Hall. Liam’s mass settings and other liturgical pieces are used by choirs all over the English speaking world. His work has been translated into Spanish, German and Swedish.

In March 2004 Liams talents were recognized by recording giant EMI who signed him for a number of albums. His EMI debut Another World was released in Ireland later that year featuring guest artists as Brian Kennedy, The Celtic Tenors, Fionnuala Sherry of Secret Garden, Moya Brennan, Eimear Quinn, Roisin OReilly amongst others. This album achieved double platinum status and was followed by his second album Time which also was hugely successful. Time was recorded with the National Philharmonic Orchestra in the beautiful city of Prague with arrangements by well known Chicago Symphony arranger Gary Fry. Liams third album Christmas Song includes a collection of Liams own favourite Christmas pieces with some new original music also.

Psalm 122

[display_podcast]

It is planned that Liam’s setting of Psalm 122 will be used in our Advent liturgies this year because the line from the Psalm – ‘pray for the peace of Jerusalem’ is one of the motifs for our Christmas REACH OUT Holy Land project.

Upcoming workshop – 1st February 2009 in Carlow Cathedral

Liam is a tremendous supporter of music ministry in our diocese. He regularly leads our local music/liturgy workshops and takes charge of the diocesan choir. Please note – Next rehearsal –
13th November at 8pm at Ballycane Church, Naas to prepare for 175th anniversary Mass in Carlow Cathedral on Sat 29th Nov at 6.15pm.

In January, Liam has arranged that the American composers Marty Haugen and Tony Alonso will conduct some workshops here in Ireland including one in Carlow Cathedral on Sunday 1st February. Marty Haugen is probably the most prolific and best respected composer of Church music in the U.S. today while Tony Alonso works as a composer especially with young people. On the previous Friday night – 30 January – there will be an evening of song at the newly renovated St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church, Portlaoise.
