A very successful launch of the K&L Peace & Justice Network took place on 25th Feb in Portlaoise Parish Centre. Our guest speaker was Archbishop Diarmuid Martin.

There was a great attendance of c. 150 people which included representatives from a wide range of organisations and parishes.

Presentations and Stands

Along with the address by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, there was also short presentations about

  • After School Arms Club – a school project
  • how a Parish undertook to achieve Fairtrade status
  • the new Irish and how we promote integration

After the presentations and the open forum (see below) everyone went downstairs to view the more than a dozen stands in the lobby of the Parish Centre. It gave a great opportunity to network!

Sharing and Mutual Support

A network is about exchanging ideas and mutual support. The launch was obviously the initial step and we will learn as we go along about the potential of the network. It was great to see and hear from some many interested people.

At the launch, people gave their contact details and we will develop a database for keeping everyone up to date. In time, we hope to have a DIRECTORY of peace and justice groups and organisations active in the diocese.

It is hoped that having a network will be a support for the various existing groups engaged in Justice issues and help the formation of new groups (e.g. a new sub-group of the Parish Council).
