Ten years ago 15,000 people celebrated the Jubilee year at a special diocesan event at the Curragh Racecourse. The organising group met up recently to remember and reflect.
Remembering the Jubilee Curragh Celebration -21st May 2000
On Saturday, May 29th, a small group of people gathered to remember a very significant event in the history of the diocese of Kildare & Leighlin.
The group were the Diocesan Jubilee Committee and they were responsible for planning ‘A Celebration of the ChristLight’ in the year 2000. This event was the culmination of three years of planning and on May 21st 2000 more than 15,000 people from parishes all over the diocese made a pilgrimage to the Curragh to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity.
Eleven of the original sixteen members of the committee revisited the venue of the celebration at the Curragh race course and among the many memories recalled was the leadership and vision of Bishop Larry Ryan (RIP October 2003.)
Most significant were the comments about the remarkable changes in Ireland and the Irish Church over the last ten years. Nonetheless the ChristLight continues to sustain us in our journey in faith.
In the words of the hymn with which our celebration began ten years ago
Christ be our light, shine in our church gathered today
