Confirmation Resource for Teachers

‘Journey to Confirmation’ was written and developed in the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin in response to teachers requests for additional material to help them prepare the children in their classes for Confirmation. It has now been in use in schools throughout the diocese and elsewhere for three years.

Its purpose is to offer teachers of Confirmation classes a structured approach to the preparation for the sacrament throughout the whole year. It supplements and complements the material offered in Alive-O7+8. It seeks to integrate and highlight the rhythm and movement of the church year into the preparation process while at the same time focusing on the key elements that teachers will need to explore with children as they prepare for Confirmation.

It also highlights some of the Saints whose feasts occur during the school year. This may help the candidates in their search for a confirmation name and enable and encourage them to offer a reasoned explanation for their choice of name.

The material offers opportunities to explore other faith traditions and how these traditions celebrate initiation.

There are concrete suggestions which enable the chaplain or parish team member to be more actively involved in the classroom preparation. There are also some opportunities for the candidates to continue the work of preparation in the home.

The hope is that the preparation programme in the classroom will be complemented and supported by a parish preparation programme which will encourage the active involvement of parents, guardians, members of the parish team and the wider parish community.
