First Award Ceremony for the Pope John Paul II Award
Press Release – 31 January 2011
On Friday 28th January 114 young people from the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin were presented with their medals and certificates on successfully completing the Pope John Paul II Award. Mgr Brendan Byrne, Diocesan Administrator and Kieran Mc Geeney, GAA All-Star presented the awards. The majority of young people received the gold award and four students from Carlow College, St Patrick’s, received ‘The Papal Cross Award’ the highest achievement in the award.
The award was launched in October 2009 by Kieran Mc Geeney and it was fitting that after encouraging the young people to participate in the initiative at its launch, he returned to congratulate them and present the awards. Kieran commended the young people for their dedication and integrity and encouraged them to continue to stand up for what they believe. Mgr Brendan Byrne spoke to the young people about how impressed he was not only by the variety of activities they had participated in but by the quality of the presentations they submitted, reflecting on their role in the Church and the contribution young people can make in the Church today.
The 400 strong attendance included family members of the awardees, representatives from the various schools and colleges of the diocese, priests and parishioners from various parishes throughout the diocese and representatives from charities and organisations that have benefited greatly from the voluntary work of the 114 awardees. The awardees came from 29 parishes and 31 schools and colleges across the diocese and beyond.
Yvonne Rooney Diocesan Co-ordinator for the award said
“We are delighted with the response to the award in the first year, it has got off to a great start and we hope many more young people will get involved in their parishes and local communities as the award continues to grow”.
As part of the proceedings on the night a message of congratulations was read from President Mary Mc Aleese. Joe O Brien from RTE interviewed five young people who shared their experiences of what they did to achieve their awards and all five spoke passionately about enjoying their participation in Church activities and Community events. The evening was a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the young people and highlight the fantastic energy and enthusiasm the young people bring to the Church.
