A sub group of the Diocesan Council of the Catholic Primary School Managers Association (CPSMA) has spent a number of months drafting a Charter for our Catholic Primary Schools.

The idea of a Charter arose as a result of the Wellsprings Programme that helped train Boards of Management in the developing of the ethos of our Catholic Schools.

The purpose of the Charter is to state, simply, what it means to be a Catholic School in the diocese of Kildare & Leighlin. Such a document would be displayed in our schools, given to parents when they come to enroll their child and to teachers applying for positions within the school.

The development of this Charter happens at a time when there is much discussion about the nature and value of Catholic education in our country. It is hoped that the document and more importantly the discussions arising from it will help to clarify our understanding of the Catholic School and affirm the value that such schools have in forming young people who make a tremendous contribution to society and to the mission of the Church.

A draft of this Charter is now being circulated for discussion to all stakeholders in Catholic education in the diocese. Copies of the draft Charter have been sent to all schools, Parent Council/Associations, Boards of Managements and priests.

Diocesan Meetings – Now Postponed

The planned series of meetings around the diocese to discuss the draft Charter during Catholic Schools Week 2010 have been postponed. These meetings will be rescheduled later in the year.

In the meantime we hope that all the stakeholders in Catholic Education will take the opportunity to discuss the draft document in preparation for future meetings. Written responses will also be most welcome
