The 32 page booklet contains information on the nature of the visit, the reason why the Pope will meet the Queen, the key themes of Pope Benedict’s papacy, ecumenism, the international work of the Vatican, child protection and the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman

300,000 copies of the booklet have been produced and copies will be distributed to parishes throughout England and Wales, including those in the Diocese of Westminster

“The Pope in the UK” will act as a resource for those helping to plan the visit, those writing about it and also for those wishing to know more about the Pope, his work and his visit to Britain

Understanding that many ordinary Catholic will want to support the Papal visit, Archbishop Nichols said: “Catholics can support the visit through their prayers, their donations and their presence.

“There will be large public events in each of the cities that Pope Benedict will visit and Catholics will have the chance to come and show their support through their attendance and presence at these events – whether it be at the event itself or by lining the streets for Pope Benedict’s procession.

Addressing concerns about the lack of a full itinerary, the Archbishop confirmed that it is customary for the Papal Office to release a full itinerary for a Papal visit two months before the visit.

He was also happy to announce that the collection for the Pope Benedict’s visit, held in parishes during Pentecost, had yielded better results than expected

During the launch, Archbishop Nichols also unveiled the logo for the visit, designed by the artist Brian Clark, which depicts a candle in front of a red and blue background encircled by the words of Cardinal Newman: ‘Heart speaks unto heart’.

The Archbishop of Westminster added: “I’m sure that these days in September will be quite remarkable and that they will be a wonderful time for our country.”
