Pope Benedict XVI dedicated his audience today to calling on everyone to assume their responsibility in protecting creation, saying that environmental emergencies and the scandal of hunger and misery demand it.

We must convert the current pattern of global development towards a greater and shared accountability for creation: this is demanded not only by environmental emergencies, but also the scandal of hunger and misery.”

This was Pope Benedict XVIs call this morning by, as he focused on environmental protection in the catechesis of today’s general audience. Responsibility must be assumed by individuals, as well as by society as a whole. The Pope thought, in particular, of the leaders of governments and international agencies who will meet soon at the United Nations to discuss the urgent issue of climate change, hoping that the debate will be constructive and the issues addressed with courage
