Special Education

The Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin has five schools which cater specifically for children with special learning needs. These schools have a Catholic Ethos and are supported by a Diocesan Advisor for Special Education, Ms Gertrude O’Gorman.

A number of schools in our diocese also have special units catering for children on the autism spectrum.

Special Schools – Kildare & Leighlin Diocese

St Laserian’s Special School, Carlow
This is a co-educational Catholic School under the patronage of the Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin for children between the ages of 5-18 who have assessed as functioning across all levels of general learning disabilities

St Anne’s Special School, Newbridge
This is a co-educational school under the patronage of KARE for pupils between the ages of 4 and 18 who have been assessed as functioning within the moderate or severe/profound range of general learning disabilities

St Mark’s Special School, Newbridge
This is a co-educational school under the patronage of KARE for pupils between the ages of 6 and 18 who have been assessed as functioning with with a mild general learning disability

St Francis’ Special School, Portlaoise
This is a co-educational Catholic School under the patronage of the Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin for children between the ages of 5-18 who have assessed as functioning with a mild general learning disability and students with moderate general learning disability

Kolbe Special School, Portlaoise
This is a co-educational Catholic school under the patronage of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary Services for pupils between the ages of 4 and 18 who have severe and profound general learning disabilities
