Last Advent many of the parishes in our diocese celebrated a Liturgy of Hope. Another Advent is approaching and as a nation, as a church, as a people, we are every bit in need of hope this year as last year.
The treasure of Advent is that it reminds us again and again of the hope that is always at the heart of our faith.
“The people in darkness have seen a great light!”
At the darkest phase of the year the Advent scriptures call us to messages and actions of hope.
1st Sunday: “The night is almost over, it will be daylight soon…let us live
decently as people do in the daylight.”
2nd Sunday: “Everything that was written long ago in the scriptures was meant to teach us something about hope…”
3rd Sunday: “Say to all faint hearts, “Courage! Do not be afraid”
4th Sunday: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Emmanuel, a name which means ‘God-is-with- us’.”
Parishes might like to take out their Liturgy of Hope resources again this year and draw upon them for a similar service or for use at the Sunday Masses, for example on the Second Sunday of Advent.
