‘Twas the weekend before Christmas….

Christmas. What comes to mind when we hear the word? Santa. Turkey. Midnight Mass. Shepherds. Baby Jesus. It is a much loved and much celebrated time of year. Full of Christmas parties; present buying, glitter and glamour. Yet, do we remember what it is all about?

Youth 2000 Ireland are hosting a Christmas retreat for 16-35 year olds in Newbridge, Co Kildare from the 16th until the 18th December. With all the preparations for Christmas in full swing, here is a chance for us all to take some time out and reflect on the wonder of the Christmas story. The true story that is at the heart of what all our preparations are about and at the heart of what our Catholic faith is about. Jesus Christ, God, becoming man as a small baby in a stable in Bethlehem over 2000 years ago.

The weekend kicks off on Friday evening and runs until Sunday afternoon. There is lots going on over the weekend, with a programme that has something for everyone, there’s a chance for everyone to get involved. From dynamic workshops on faith and the journey of life, to inspiring talks and beautiful music, Holy Mass and a wonderful Healing and Reconciliation Service on Saturday night, with time for chilling out, making friends and being part of something a little bit different and a whole lot special.

If you would be coming to this event for the first time, you will receive a warm welcome. People often comment on the smile that they notice on the faces of everyone they encounter. The warmth and friendliness of the volunteers, the joy of the priests, the enthusiasm of the band, the welcome from the organisers, the friendships made over cups of tea and the sense of belonging to something greater than the sum of the parts.

Youth 2000 like to celebrate their faith with enthusiasm and joy and to share that faith with their peers. There is a variety of events throughout the year ranging from the ultra-glamorous Youth 2000 ball in February to the wellie-wearing summer festival in Clonmacnois in August, as well as over 40 prayer groups throughout the country which meet on a weekly basis, the Christmas Retreat and lots of social outings including table quizzes, climbing Croagh Patrick, dodgeball competitions, and many more. And through all of this the chance to experience true joy, real friendship and life as never before.

So what do you need to do to come to this weekend? Check it out online at www.youth2000.ie and register to attend. You’re welcome to come to all or any of the weekend. If you’re staying on site you’ll need to bring a sleeping bag and warm clothes. There are free buses from around the country and the whole weekend is donation only.

If you’re aged between 16 and 35, come to Newbridge and join over 500 young people from all over the country. Come to have a great weekend. Come to meet new people.
