Building a new Haiti from the rubble of tragedy
In the labyrinth of narrow laneways that cut through Villa Rosa, Saul Darbouze leads us to the place he calls home. The path changes from concrete to mud as we enter further into this tangled web of side-streets and alleyways. Eventually we arrive at our destination, a small white building fronted by a porch on which Saul’s three dogs sleep. Home sweet home.
Saul is still settling in. His memories are still raw of his old house, which stood on the same spot, and of his wife who died when it crumbled to the ground. They had raised a family there together but when the earth shook on January 12th, 2010, the home they had worked so hard to build crashed to the ground, destroying everything.
As a driver for his local parish, Saul was on the road when the earthquake struck.
“I was driving the car when it started to shake,” he recalls. “The nuns who were in the car asked me, ‘what are you doing?’ and I said ‘it’s not me, it’s the ground’. I had to leave the car and walk home. I was very worried for my family. When I got home, everything was destroyed.”
Homeless and grieving, Saul was forced to build a shack out of corrugated iron to live in. It was a pitiful existence, in no way suitable for a man of 74 years of age.
“It was a very difficult life,” he says in his understating way.
After 11 months in the shack, Saul was thrown a lifeline by people in Ireland. Through donations to Trócaire, a new house was built for Saul, allowing him to recover and get his life back on track. He looks around at the devastation that is still evident in the Villa Rosa district of Port au Prince and he says he feels “very lucky” to have a permanent roof over his head. He knows that in Haiti even something as basic as shelter cannot be taken for granted.
“People should have access to the minimum they need to survive,” he says. “I am lucky because I can survive but many others cannot. People should be able to live with respect.”
The Haiti earthquake was one of those disasters so big that it was almost too difficult to comprehend. At 4.53pm on the afternoon of January 12th, 2010, people were going about their daily routine. By 4.54pm everything had changed. Entire cities brought to the ground, 250,000 bodies lying lifeless under the rubble.
The earthquake lasted just 33 seconds but during that time Haitians died at the rate of up to 7,500 per second. Thirty-three seconds that changed a country forever.
People in Ireland opened their hearts to Haiti, donating €7.58m to fund Trócaire’s relief operation. Half of this money was donated at parish collections all over Ireland. The response was enormous, and so too was the relief operation.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, Trócaire used donations to provide food for 1.5 million people, healthcare to 1 million people and shelter to 160,000 people. In the days and weeks that followed the earthquake, Irish donations were used to keep people alive.
Having provided short-term emergency relief for people left homeless by the earthquake, we have now moved into long-term projects aimed at rebuilding Haiti and bringing real change to people’s lives.
Two hours drive east of Port au Prince, Sauvah Anderson is preparing to do his bit to help with the reconstruction. Sauvah was trapped for two hours underneath the rubble of his school when it collapsed during the earthquake. Fortunately for him, he was on the top floor of the building when it collapsed – most of the pupils in the classrooms below were killed.
He was rescued and left Port au Prince to return to his home town of Fonds Parisien, where Trócaire had teamed-up with the Carmelite Sisters to build a training centre and school for almost 300 young people. The centre, funded entirely by Trócaire, equips the students with skills needed in t[...]</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Listen to a piece from Fr. Liam Lawtons new CD – Prayers of Hope and Healing due for release on December 2011 also find out about upcoming tour dates in December 2011.
From Prayers of Hope and Healing (Liam Lawton)

In a time of great uncertainty and changing world, many are searching for a deeper meaning in life. Many lives have been affected by global recession, conflict, hurt and confusion. People are realizing that perhaps to find a deeper more meaningful life we need to relieve ourselves of much superficiality and focus on the more important necessities. Faith in times of crisis has always given comfort, hope and consolation. In the Bible we are reminded three hundred and sixty five times not to be afraid ! Think of the reassurance of such words ~ One for every day of our year!
In this new audio Cd ~ Prayers of Hope and Healing ~ Fr. Liam Lawton reinforces this assurance with words of comfort, courage and conviction. The prayers and reflections deal with many themes of life and society today ~ Joy, Sorrow, Growing old, Birth, Death, Work, Life and Loss… the pieces are set in beautiful orchestrations based on Liam’s original music by Mark Cahill ~ Liam’s musical director and allow the listener to absorb the text with time for reflection. The prayers are read by Liam, and many people will be familiar with his reflective voice from his many concerts and performances.
This Cd will make a great travelling companion when our cars become our cathedrals or for one who simply wishes to take some quiet time in the midst of a busy day or night. It is not a full listening Cd but rather one that offers the listener a chance to select a particular theme from the many offered and journey to a resting place where a loving reassuring God awaits.

Our ethical Christmas gift of safe motherhood.
Aisling, who you may recognise from Xposé is due in December, dressed in pink to stand up for women who do not live to see their newborn because they have no medical care. “For all its faults, I am so grateful to be pregnant in this country,” said Aisling. “I often think of the women with no comfy bed, no hot running water and no proper health facilities and I count my lucky stars.” The gift range truely captures the spirit of Christmas, so take a moment to browse through the gifts and get something amazing for that special person in your life.
Some of the gifts include fruit trees, chickens, goats and water. For details and how to order click here
How it Works
Through your generosity, we can help people in the developing world to help themselves – to grow food, to earn an income, to get an education, to access healthcare and to protect their human rights.
Each Global Gift consists of a decorative certificate enclosed in a card, showing how the selected gift will be used. The person who buys the gift can send this card to a friend, family member or client as a gift to them. The recipient of the card can read about how their gift will benefit a family overseas.
Visit Gifts in Action section to see the impact Global Gifts are having around the world.

November is the month when people remember the dead and as such we will be running a series of interviews looking at issues surrounding death. It is not always the easiest topic to face, but it is enormously important. This week we have Marie Lynch from the Hospice Foundation talking with Miriam Gormally about the needs of carers. What are their own needs in looking after somebody who is facing the end of their life.</itunes:summary>

This Sunday is Mission Sunday and a time to remember the work done the world over by Irish missionaries. Miriam Gormally met Fr. Eamon Aylward executive secretary of the Irish Missionary Union (IMU), who himself spent 12 years in Mozambique. The IMU has also produced a CD and book of the missionaries stories from all over the world. Miriam began by saying to Eamon that she was stuck by the danger which many missionaries faced by going overseas, often to help in troubled and war-torn areas.</itunes:summary>

Insurance and Healthcare

Get comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling and check what it covers
Registration with the World Youth Day website (http://www.madrid11.com/) includes accident insurance
Apply for a European Health Insurance Card from the EHIC website (www.ehic.ie) – this entitles you to free emergency care in a public hospital in Spain. It should not be regarded as a substitute for insurance – failure to take out comprehensive insurance can lead to considerable financial and logistical difficulties for you and/or your family should problems arise. For example, an air ambulance to repatriate you home following a serious accident can cost in the region of €20,000 – this is not covered under the European Health Insurance Card.

Passports

Keep your passport in a safe place – carry a photocopy of your passport with you (also leave a photocopy with your family at home and ensure they have easy access to long form of your birth cert) and leave the original locked away.
If your passport is lost/stolen, the Embassy or nearest Honorary Consulate can issue you with an Emergency Travel Certificate (ETC) – you will have to get a police report and come in person to one of our offices. Please also b[...]</itunes:summary>

Fr Liam Lawton, one of our priests here in Kildare & Leighlin Diocese, is celebrating 20 years of publishing Church music.
Fr Liam is a native of Edenderry, County Offaly. After studies in Maynooth, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Kildare & Leighlin in 1984. After serving in the Cathedral Parish and Knockbeg College, Bishop Ryan gave him permission to pursue a full-time music ministry. This ministry was fully supported by his successor Bishop Moriarty.
Fr Liam has recorded 12 collections for various record companies including EMI and GIA. His music has been translated and recorded in Spanish, German and Swedish and in the Irish language. Many well known artists both at home and abroad have recorded his songs. His music has been used at numerous auspicious occasions, including Concerts in the Vatican, the White House and the Chicago Symphony Hall.
One of his compositions – the Cloud’s Veil- became especially popular in the US at the time of the 9/11 tragedy and featured frequently at Memorial Services for the 9/11 victims.
Fr Liam has made a huge contribution to Church music. His compositions have become ‘standards’ for Church choirs and congregations here and abroad. His workshops have always been a great source of encouragement and advancement for choirs. Fr Liam has been closely associated with a number of charities and his concerts have often been used to raise much needed funds.
