In this podcast Brother David from the Taizé Community speaks about Brother Roger’s life and legacy...

The brothers come from about 30 countries across the world and the order has a strong devotion to peace and justice through prayer and meditation.
Celebration of the 70th anniversary of Taizé - Echoes
source -www.taize.fr/en

On August 20, 1940, as World War II was raging, Brother Roger arrived alone in the village of Taizé, with the idea of founding a community. He died on August 16, 2005, killed by the pathological act of a young woman during evening prayer.

Since he did not want there to be too much speech in churches, the Taizé Community marked the double anniversary – 70 years of its founding and five years of the founder’s death – primarily by holding a simple pilgrimage on the evening of Saturday, August 14.

With 5000 people on the hill, the brothers met at 7:30pm in a large meadow on the edge of the village and celebrated the first part of the evening prayer outdoors. There was singing, a biblical text read in several languages by young people from various continents, and a few moments of silence. A young Italian from Trent, who had been living in Taizé already for some time, then joined the community by receiving the white garment worn by the brothers.

Then all together, the brothers and the thousands of young people from seventy countries who had spent the week in Taizé, together with some children, went through the village on a pilgrimage. They passed the cemetery of the small Romanesque church where Brother Roger was buried and where, for this evening, was placed the Egyptian Coptic icon of friendship, which was dear to Brother Roger’s heart. Then all went towards the Church of Reconciliation, in which the second part of the prayer took place: the gospel of the resurrection was read and thousands of tapers which each person held in their hand were lit, to symbolize the hope of resurrection.
Prayer
Brother Alois said then the following prayer, and these were the only words that were spoken:
God of love, we thank you for the given life of our brother Roger, who died five years ago and who arrived alone in this small village of Taizé seventy years ago.

He sought earnestly to live in your trust and to express your infinite kindness for every human being, whether a believer or a nonbeliever—you, the living God, who do not condemn, who exclude no one from your love.

In this trust, you enabled him to find the source of joy and peace: peace of heart that made him a creator of peace among humans.

Like John the Baptist, he only wanted to prepare the way of your Christ, to reunite your people and to tell everyone, "God is close to you."

Turning to you, God of love, and being close to the poorest were inseparable for him. To relieve suffering, to welcome, to welcome young people in particular, to listen so as to understand all of others: that was the path you opened for him in order to follow Christ Jesus and to be attentive to the Holy Spirit.

Poor and vulnerable as he was himself, as he put it, he chose to love with all his strength.

He loved your Church that gathers believers in one communion beyond all boundaries— political, social or cultural. It was for him the sign of hope of a reconciled humanity.

We thank you for being able to remember him with the whole Church. The words of Pope Benedict go straight to our heart when he wrote, “May his witness to an ecumenism of holiness inspire us in our march towards unity.” The Patriarchs of Constantinople and Moscow, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lutheran and Reformed leaders, and many others, join us to express our gratitude.

Enable us all to continue w</itunes:summary>

Podcast
This podcast made available from Vatican Radio

Trent 2010
more information - www.catholicethics.com

Six hundred theologians from all five continents descended on the Northern Italian city of Trent this week to discuss “Catholic Theological Ethics in World Culture”.

With over 50 sessions on topics ranging from family to environmental protection, from sexuality to good governance, the theologians sought to approach each issue from the point of view of the Catholic Church tradition in Moral Theology and contemporary culture.

Theologians of the stature of Italian Archbishop Bruno Forte, the Archbishop of Munich and Freising Reinhard Marx, chaired sessions alongside lay men and women theologians from the US Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Jesuit Priest James Keenan is professor of Theology at Boston College in the US. He is also the co- chairman of the convention. He pointed out that where once most theologians were formed in Rome, Paris or Holland, over the past thirty years, major faculties of theology have arisen in Brazil, the Philippines and India, making meetings such as this one in Trent an important focal point for Catholic theologians.

Of the numerous interventions, Fr Keenan highlighted the presentation made by American Theologian Julie Hanlon Rubio, on Family practise and Archbishop Reinhard Marx’s intervention on the Future of Moral Theology:
“He gave us this discourse about the need to work with one another to be able to appreciate how social ethics is a deep part of our own theological tradition and about how we need to get to a moral objectivity that is really rooted in tradition”.
Fr Keenan noted that there is often tension between the need to root research in tradition and the need for theologians to engage with contemporary culture.
Secularism and Relativism
Asked about what Pope Benedict XVI has termed as a “creeping secularism” and his call to address the moral relativism of today’s society, Fr Keenan said that the notion of relativism “ cuts two ways”.

“We can have a relativism in which we simply say; ‘what the church once taught in 1548 has never changed and always remains the same’”, which Fr Keenan notes, is not possible.
“There is the relativism of those who want to objectify tradition is such as way that they want us to be living in the past with rules that do not address some of the contemporary challenges that we have. So there is a relativism that comes from objectifying the tradition”.
But then notes Fr Keenan,
“there is a relativism that is subjective, that is very liberal, that is very progressive, that says that tradition can be anything that I want it to be, that we don’t read the scriptures, that we don’t read tradition itself. This is another type of relativism. We shouldn’t think that relativism comes simply from the left, it can also come from the right. What I think a real Church is looking at, if it wants to be harmonious and integrated, is to really find the tradition as it needs to be now, in light of what it once was and what it will be”.</itunes:summary>

Podcast
This podcast made available from Vatican Radio

In this podcast Msgr Andrew Faley (assistant general secretary in charge of ecumenical and inter-religious relations at the Catholic bishops conference of England and Wales) reflects that while the Synod decision represents a significant setback to the goal of full visible unity between the churches, they may also bring a greater clarity to discussions between the two denominations. (VR)
Consecration of Women Bishops
The Church of England has moved one step closer to the consecration of women bishops during a highly charged debate at its General Synod meeting in the northern city of York this week.  A narrowly defeated vote in one of the Synod’s three houses of Bishops, Clergy and Laity means there will be few concessions made to traditionalists who have been strongly opposed to the move.
What is the General Synod
source - www.cofe.anglican.org

The General Synod is the national assembly of the Church of England. It came into being in 1970 under the Synodical Government Measure 1969, replacing an earlier body known as the Church Assembly. It continues a tradition of synodical government which, in England, has its origins in the medieval period. It has powers in the following areas:
Legislation by Measure
To pass Measures which, if approved by resolution of each House of Parliament, receive Royal Assent and thereby become part of the law of England
Legislation by Canon
To legislate by Canon, subject to Royal Licence and Assent
Relations with other Churches
To regulate the Church of England’s relations with other churches and to make provisions for matters relating to worship and doctrine. It can make provision by Act of Synod, regulation or other instrument in cases where legislation by or under a Measure or Canon is not necessary
Liturgy and Doctrinal Assent
To approve, amend, continue or discontinue liturgies and make provision for any matter (except the publication of banns of marriage) to which rubrics of the Book of Common Prayer relate and to ensure that the forms of service contained in the Book of Common Prayer continue to be available for use in the Church of England. The Synod also decides the form in which ministers and officers of the Church of England are required to assent to the doctrine of the Church of England (the Declaration of Assent).
Deliberation
To consider any other matters of religious or public interest
 Finance
To approve (or reject) the central church budget each year.</itunes:summary>

In this podcast we find out more about this legendary Polish priest with Rafal Wieczynski, film director of "Popieluszko: Freedom is within us".
Blessed Jerzy Popieluszko
Jego ofiarna posługa i męczeństwo są szczeglnym znakiem zwycięstwa dobra nad złem.
(His zealous service and his martyrdom are a special sign of the victory of good over evil)
Benedict XVI
Father Jerzy Popieluszko beatification ceremony was held today in Warsaw's Pilsudski Square. It was presided over by the prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes, Archbishop Angelo Amato, on behalf of Benedict XVI, with the concelebration of some 120 bishops and 1400 priests. Some 150,000 other participated in the ceremony, including the martyr's 90-year-old mother, and his brothers and sisters.

Fr Jerzy Popieluszko, the 37-year-old priest was the chaplain of the Polish Solidarity movement, and was martyred in 1984 when Communist agents beat him and threw him into the icy waters of the Vistula River. Some 400,000 people attended his funeral, and since that day, 17 million have visited his tomb. Every October 19, a 24-hour vigil is held to commemorate the day he was killed.

Benedict XVI spoke about the beatification of Fr Popieluszko in an address before praying the midday Angelus with the faithful gathered at the Eleftheria Sports Centre in Nicosia.

"His zealous service and his martyrdom are a special sign of the victory of good over evil," the Holy Father stated.
"May his example and his intercession nourish the zeal of priests and enkindle the faithful with love."
Papal remarks
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

At the midday hour it is the Church's tradition to turn in prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary, joyfully recalling her ready acceptance of the Lord's invitation to become the mother of God. It was an invitation that filled her with trepidation, one which she could scarcely even comprehend. It was a sign that God had chosen her, his lowly handmaid, to cooperate with him in his saving work. How we rejoice at the generosity of her response! Through her "yes", the hope of the ages became a reality, the One whom Israel had long awaited came into the world, into our history. Of him the angel promised that his kingdom would have no end (cf. Lk 1:33).

Some thirty years later, as Mary stood weeping at the foot of the cross, it must have been hard to keep that hope alive. The forces of darkness seemed to have gained the upper hand. And yet, deep down, she would have remembered the angel's words. Even amid the desolation of Holy Saturday the certitude of hope carried her forward into the joy of Easter morning. And so we, her children, live in the same confident hope that the Word made flesh in Mary's womb will never abandon us. He, the Son of God and Son of Mary, strengthens the communion that binds us together, so that we can bear witness to him and to the power of his healing and reconciling love.

I would now like to say a few words in Polish on the happy occasion of the beatification today of Jerzy Popiełuszko, priest and martyr.
[I send cordial greetings to the Church in Poland which today rejoices at the elevation to the altars of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko. His zealous service and his martyrdom are a special sign of the victory of good over evil. May his example and his intercession nourish the zeal of priests and enkindle the faithful with love.]

Let us now implore Mary our Mother t</itunes:summary>
